Reasons why you should plan your next visit to BiH

After a short trip around the beautiful and interesting BiH, I realized that this country is like a micro model of the Balkans. In one place you can find from everything – Christianity and Islam, communism and democracy, bloody history and bright future, abandoned buildings and shiny shopping centers, people living together and apart at the same time. Bosnia and Hercegovina has it all.

Here are only some of the hundreds of reasons why you should plan your next visit to BiH:

Super old

Sometimes, when you play a song which is from 60’s, 70’s or 80’s somebody says:
“Oh my God, that is suuuuuper old”

The funny thing is that when they listen to some song from 2003 they say the same. This is obviously one more side of our “let’s hurry up, everything is old fashioned, let’s buy new stuff (it doesn’t matter if we need it or not) and let’s listen to music as new as possible (it doesn’t matter if it is just a pile of crap).
Anyway, people are quite happy listening to Rhyana, Britney,Enrique, Pitbull  “music” to realize they are listening the same song for years.
“Party, baby, you and me, tonight, my soul, my love, let’s do it, let’s make it”
So if I have to choose between the old song and the 2000 songs which are the same one, I know what to do…

My favorite book

This is one of my favorite books. I have never laughed so much with a book, I strongly recommend it:

These are some quotes:
“Is my paranoia getting completely out of hand, or are you mongoloids really talking about me?”
“I mingle with my peers or no one, and since I have no peers, I mingle with no one.”
“When Fortuna spins you downward, go out to a movie and get more out of life.”
“I refuse to "look up." Optimism nauseates me. It is perverse. Since man's fall, his proper position in the universe has been one of misery.”
“I suspect that I am the result of particularly weak conception on the part of my father. His sperm was probably emitted in a rather offhand manner.”
“Oh, Fortuna, you capricious sprite!”
“I also told the students that, for the sake of humanity’s future, I hoped that they were all sterile. I could never have possibly read over the illiteracies and misconceptions burbling from the dark minds of these students. It will be the same wherever I work”

BRILLIANT book

I've been there

I was talking to my boss the other day and he told me “ Oh, god, you have been everywhere!!” I didn’t realize before but in the past 12 months, only in one year, I have been in all these places:

Valencia
Madrid
Leipzig
Dresden
Berlin
Sevilla
Zagreb
Samobor
Rijeka
Sarajevo
Paris
Istambul
Kavala
Thessaloniki
Berat

Tirana
Skoder
Budva
Dubrovnik
Split
Zadar
Belgrade
Viena
Prague
Trieste
Padova
Florence
Budapest
Ljubljana

Two conclusions came to my mind. If someone doesn’t travel is because he/she doesn’t want, because it is not about the money, for sure.

It is not about the city, the most important thing is with whom you are, if you have nobody to share what you are seeing there is no point to travel.

Dreams come true...

We all dream. I prefer to say I don't have dreams but rather goals to achieve, yet it's not always easy to define where the line between realistic goals and fancy dreams lies. As all people on this planet I want to be happy, and sure, not average-happy but blissfully happy.

For me being happy doesn't mean much at the moment: having the job I love, traveling much, having time to enjoy life every day (forget about Ukrainian 9-to-5 office hours: you work for 11 months and 2 weeks and afterwards, half-dead go to Turkey for a week being unable to crawl out of the hotel).

Being back to Zagreb after my last trip I feel: mission completed!
I do the job I love: coordination of international projects, organisation of local events, assisting on training courses, working trips round Croatia. I love people and I love working with people, and I reached the point when I gladly return to the office after 2-weeks trainings and enjoy staying in front of my lap top with a cup of coffee and dozens of unread emails.

Our first 'Open Stage' event in Zagreb
When I was coming to Croatia with expiring Estonian visa I couldn't imagine I would be traveling all around every month and fall in love with Italy (hate countries and places that are too much talked about). Yet, having explored all neighboring countries, I keep returning to Italy. Why? It's awesome. Not only awesome but amazingly different: mafia-Naples, touristic Pisa, gorgeous Florence, Shakespeare Verona, middle-aged San Gimignano, irresistable Cinque Terre and dark Genova.

Tuscanian San Gimignano
It was 1 month ago when I decided for myself that it would be cool to move traveling to a new level. Meeting locals, tasting national food, sightseeing is cool but getting boring at some point. And here it was: eureka! I should start going to places to participate in either special occasions or some well-known events like Venice carnival, Siena horse-racing, Pisa luminaria festival. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Andy Warhol exhibition in Peschiera del Garda (a freaky guy eating tomato soup every day for the last 20 years and making a fortune out of it), a day in Italian Disneyland - Gardaland (although Disneyland tells us the stories of most beloved catroon heroes, Gardaland has much to offer for every taste) and tadadadam - Milan World Expo 2015 with 145 countries presenting their culture, food and best practices to save energy and feed the planet. Turkmenistan food, Burundi coffee, Cuban pina colada and Chile dessert - a small part of what I tried in this crazy village of food and cultural melting pot.

Tree of life, Expo-2015
Qatar literally built a palace, Russia overwhelmed everyone with loud music and free food tasting, UK went for scientific approach, Korea once again proved everyone to be highly-tecnological country. Each country was unique and told the story in the way it's importnat for them. Apart from it, Cirque du Soleil, boxing fights, fountain shows - one day is not enough.

And as for enjoying ife, sure: salsa, people who became important for me in this one year, good food after all. What is next? Being happy and create more success in life while enjoying it. September will definitely bring new challenges and new emotions.
Wednesday salsa party

Kisses and hugs, Juliya.

Small/Big difference

I guess everyone has had a situation when you buy a new shoes and the shoelaces just doesnt work. So I had this one too I bought a new shoes with ‘’broken shoelaces’’ after few days of irritation I realize I should google if there is something that could be done to solve this challenge.  The answer to my question was suprisingly simple.

,,sometimes a small advantage someplace in life can yield tremendous results someplace else’’

Want to help someone? Shut up and listen!

I feel like sharing my favorite TEDx talk with you today. This talk I saw it before coming to Croatia as a EVS volunteer and it really opened my mind a bit .

When most well-intentioned aid workers hear of a problem they think they can fix, they go to work. This, Ernesto Sirolli suggests, is naive. In this funny and impassioned talk, he proposes that the first step is to listen to the people you're trying to help, and tap into their own entrepreneurial spirit. His advice on what works will help any entrepreneur.

“I decided when I was 27 years old to only respond to people, and I invented a system called Enterprise Facilitation, where you never initiate anything, you never motivate anybody, but you become a servant of the local passion, the servant of local people who have a dream to become a better person. So what you do -- you shut up. You never arrive in a community with any ideas, and you sit with the local people. We don't work from offices. We meet at the cafe. We meet at the pub. We have zero infrastructure. And what we do, we become friends, and we find out what that person wants to do.“

TOP 15 reasons why you shouldn't go for EVS

There are plenty of reasons why you shouldn't go for EVS. Today we have the pleasure to present you TOP 15 reasons why you shouldn't go for EVS

  1. You’ll meet local people who want to hug and kiss you because they found out you are an AWESOME foreign

  3. You’ll find out that live music sounds different in every corner
  4. One day you’ll woke up surrounded by water and beaches
  5.       You'll realize that the only amazing memories after your EVS will be the relationships and people who helped you to find yourself.
  6. You’ll find out that sharing the same food with people from the whole Europe it’s not a surprise anymore
  7. If you don’t want to have amazing parties with people all around the world

  9. If you don’t want to travel to completely new different places
  10. You will probably get used to new city so well that you will never want to come back to your home town
  11. You will get so great friendships you will have no time for previous ones
  12. You will have so much interesting things to do in the real life that you will miss out all the stuff what is happening on fb
  13. You’ll find yourself in danger to turn into multilingual and be able to easily make friendship with anyone you meet on your way
  14. You might get so much professional experience you’ll be overwhelmed with it and never return to a boring 9-to-5 office job you hated for the last 2 years
  15. You might be forced to quit all your bad habits of drinking too much alcohol and smoking as you’ll prefer  to spend pocket money on traveling and good food

'You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.'

On 1st September last year I made my decision and accepted the challenge to live abroad for one year as a volunteer. All about new insights and learning experiences in Croatia can be seen in photos and read on blog although words and pictures are not enough to express how spending time here changed me and my life.

How this experience changed me?

Before coming here I was a bit confused. I finished project management studies and my dream was to practice more in my field so I could become an expert. For this is needed 10000 practice hours as one of my favorite authors Malcolm Gladwell said in „Outliers“ book.

I didn’t even thought that one of the options could be to go abroad. After discussing with my mentor from the university I found out about Synergy Romania and EVS opportunity. Later I applied for EVS in Syncro and being accepted I took my flight to Zagreb and started volunteer.

Working with best team ever in Synergy Croatia I became more responsible and organized, patient and proactive. I learned from every single person I met and this is how they changed me.

How this experience changed my life?

I am responsible for my own actions and life. I understood that I have to take an action beyond thought. For example, I wanted to be more organized and to develop time management skills and I achieve it by finding the person who is master in practicing it and learn from him. There are plenty of examples of what surprise me about Croatian people and in order to keep it short and simple I made top 3 things.

Top 3 most amazing things I found out and checked about Croatian people:

1.  There are „Huggy“ people ( when words are not enough or there is a situation without escape they just hug you... and that helps  )
2.  Masters in listening to you ( when you have a lot of feelings and ideas that you want to share they are those kind of people in whom you can truly trust and speak with )
3. Warm ( speaking with them you can actually feel the warmness of their soul, they don't fake it, they really care about you)

I could add more things on the list but I will keep this top 3 until my next blog post in which I will write more about my experiences in Croatia and what I got out of it. But I can say for sure that this quote applies to me a lot: 'You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.'

Three things that surprised me the most about Croatia/Croatians

There are million things, but let’s make it easier so I am going to say 3 specific examples.

1.       Are you a robot?/ let’s eat…/let’s have a party

Ok, I am from Spain so since we are human beings when we meet people we kiss and we are kind and we smile a lot so obviously when somebody say “Bok drago mi je” and shake your hands is a bit uncomfortable, even if I knew this before because it is happening in the rest of Europe I am still freaking out how people can be so distant and so cold, let’s make it clear:

Me: “ Hey, ho are you man? Everything ok?”

Random Croatian person : “hey, everything ok, thanks”

Me : “Do you have some plans for tonight maybe?”

Random Croatian person: “Yes, I have some”

Me: “ahh, ok cool, what are you doing?”

Random Croatian person : “I am having some drinks with some friends, WHY??????”

(It wasn’t clear that I wanted this person to invite to join them??)

Let’s eat

Something easy to understand:

Morning-Breakfast
13:30/14:30 lunch
21:00/22:00 dinner

People having dinner when is still sunny? At 17:30/18:00/19:00? Are we crazy or what? I can’t go to sleep if I am hungry and of course I will be hungry if I have dinner at 18:30! Plus it is not healthy to be 13 hours without eating ;)

Let’s party

Party=having fun, forget about problems, talk, drink, eat, dance, do whatever you want to do. NO STRESS

It was quite surprising/annoying/depressing to see how people have a lot of problems just to understand that there is no need to have a reason to make a party:

Me: “We have a party this Friday, would you like to join?”
Random Croatian person: “A party, this weekend? Why?”
Me: “Why? You need a reason to have a party?”
Random Croatian person: “Are you celebrating something or what?”
Me: “Oh, yes, I guess we are celebrating we are young, e are abroad, we are happy and we are ALIVE, do you think is it enough to make a party?”
So we just spread the word all around because you ant to have as much fun as possible but for Croatians live is not that easy little Jorge…
Random Croatian person :“What wait a second? What are we buying?
Me: “Buy and bring whatever you want, this is a party, just relax”
Random Croatian person “Wait, wait, are we cooking?”
Me: “This is a party not a dinner, anyway bring whatever you want, feel free to do it, this is a party, let’s enjoy”
Random Croatian person “What time do you want me to go there, should I invite more people, is it ok if you don’t know them??”
Me “Bring with you whoever you want, there is no need to ask me, this is a party JUST RELAX”
Random Croatian person: “What are we doing after the party, are we going to some club? What time?”
Me: “Go to hell… :D”

Crosswalk

Zagreb, Croatia, random street, 08:00 AM (or whenever….)

An intrepid Spanish guy is about to do something quite reckless, he wants to cross the street using the crosswalk and he thinks some Croatian driver gives a shit about it!!!!

Sorry dude this is not going to happen NEVER, if you want to cross the street you have to risk your life, you should be extraordinary brave, you have to look into drivers eyes and tell them “U picku….” Because, don’t get me wrong, courtesy is not working here, they will be making fun of you if you try just with the “Molim vas…” so, this is my advice:

“You could die in every single crosswalk in this beautiful country so enjoy every second because drivers don’t care at all about you”

3.       English

It was surprising/embarrassing to discover how almost every single person working in a store in Zagreb have a quite better English than mine:

“Oprostite…Engleski…?”

“Yes sure Sir, how can I help you?, just please let me know if there is something that you need, and I have to apologize because I started to talk to you in Croatian I didn’t notice you don’t know my language, anyway if there is something I could help you please let me know. Oh sorry Sir, you may don’t understand me? You want me to speak in German? Italian? Spanish maybe?”

“Ok dude…”

10 months, 10 songs

When you have problems with your memory, when you forget a lot of things, when you feel your mind is like 85 years old person you need MUSIC to remind you in a couple of seconds where were you, doing what and whit whom. These are my 10 songs in these 10 months in Croatia, it doesn’t mean I love them (I don’t like a few of them, I love some of them) but for sure I can sum up my 10 months in these 10 songs. Music, please, don’t abandon me.
